Scientists use AI to diagnose spinal cord injuries

Intel just announced that it is partnering with Brown University to help solve one of the most puzzling medical conditions of all: spinal cord injury.

Researchers from Brown University and Intel proposed that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be used; to help people with spinal cord injuries regain movement. The Smart Spine Interface project is a DARPA-supported initiative that proposes the use of AI to restore bladder movement and control in patients with paralyzing injuries.

What is this all about?

By means of a device that manages to excite the bone marrow of the affected person by adding intense therapy, it makes a person with mobility limitations intentionally move their legs and walk again. The person has been able to stand up and perform gradual movements for the first time in 3 years after being diagnosed with a complete motor cripple.

David Borton, Professor of Engineering at Brown University said that spinal cord damage is devastating; Little is known about how they manage to take advantage of the remaining circuits around the injury to promote rehabilitation and restoration of damaged function. If we can hear the spinal circuits near the injury for the first time and then take measurements in real time with Intel's AI hardware and software combination solutions; They will find new knowledge about the spinal cord and accelerate the creation of new therapies.

Spinal cord injuries will soon be a thing of the past

Researchers behind the project say it promises to significantly increase autonomy and quality of life for the 20% of individuals with traumatic spinal cord injuries who end up tetraplegic.

Much of the research to improve the mobility of paralyzed people has focused on electrical stimulation of muscles, applying machine-brain interfaces.

Brown University does not claim that the project will be successful, however; The information they obtain from the study will go a long way toward setting the course for possible treatment for people with spinal cord injuries.
