Scientists patent the creation of a system to collect space debris

Young Russian scientists talk about a system of space devices that is responsible for cleaning Earth's orbit.

The Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, reported on the patent of a cleaning system to start cleaning the orbit of our planet.

The students and scientists of the Báuman State Technical University, with the support of Professor Gueorgui Scheglov, presented a project of spacecraft systems for cleaning several large objects from the orbit. Everything indicates that the team of scientists and students received the necessary patent to have the green light in the realization of these ships, which would make them pioneers in this technology.

Over the next few months, the team of scientists will begin to develop the prototype of the system, a project that will need funding and for this, the team will present its project to the 70th International Astronomy Congress.

Professor Georgui Scheglov indicated that the system is composed of several ships: one that is the main space module and another 15 braking modules. Its operation will consist in that these modules will stick to the fragments of garbage or space junk and remove it from Earth orbit.

Background of contamination.

The UN has already warned that since the beginning of the space race, humans have left thousands of tons of scrap floating in orbit and that these can damage satellite communications systems, as well as the study of outer space.

According to the European Space Agency (ESA), more than 5.000 launches by different countries have accumulated about 23.000 objects that are in orbit. Of that enormous number, only about 1.200 are satellites that are in operation.

ESA has estimated that 750.000 objects of more than one centimeter are moving at high speed in our orbit that are of no use and whose collision with a satellite in operation could cause serious damage to the latter.
